Following the release of Netflix’s Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, Erik Menendez has publicly condemned the series, calling it a “dishonest portrayal of the tragedies surrounding our crime.” In 1996, Erik and Lyle Menendez were convicted of murdering their parents, José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menéndez, and received life sentences without parole. The brothers continue to assert that their actions were driven by years of abuse at the hands of their parents.
In a statement shared by his wife, Tammi Menendez, Erik expressed his disappointment, stating, “I thought we had moved past the damaging narratives surrounding our case, but this show seems to purposefully perpetuate them.” He questioned Ryan Murphy’s intentions, implying that the inaccuracies in the series cannot be attributed to ignorance alone.
Erik's statement highlighted the historical context of their trial, criticizing the portrayal of male victims of sexual abuse and lamenting how the series undermines the progress made in addressing these issues. “It’s disheartening to see such a powerful figure distort our story, pushing us back to a time when victim narratives were dismissed,” he said.
He concluded by emphasizing the importance of truth, stating, “Violence against a child creates silent crime scenes that deserve acknowledgment, not sensationalization.” Erik thanked those who have supported him throughout the years, underscoring the lasting impact of their experiences.
