The latest iPad Pro, featuring the M4 chip, has been lauded for its impressive hardware and software capabilities. Following the launch of iPadOS 18 on September 16, eager users rushed to upgrade. However, some have reported their devices becoming non-functional, prompting Apple to withdraw the update.
The iPadOS 18 introduced several enticing features, including a customizable home screen, enhanced Apple Pencil handwriting, live audio transcription, and the long-awaited Calculator app. These improvements understandably drove users to install the update quickly.
According to MacRumors, Apple has now removed the option to download iPadOS 18 for the M4 iPad Pro, although it remains available for other iPad models. Reports from users on Reddit reveal troubling issues: some iPad Pros simply stopped working during the update process. One user shared that their device powered down and couldn't be revived, even with a computer.
While I initially faced a similar scare with my iPad Pro, it eventually returned to normal. Unfortunately, others have not been so lucky. One user detailed their experience in a Reddit post titled "iPad OS 18 bricked my M4 13-inch," explaining that they received a replacement after visiting an Apple Store.
The exact cause of these problems is still unclear. MacRumors speculated it might relate to installing an earlier update (iPadOS 17.7) before moving to iPadOS 18. Personally, I skipped that step.
In a statement to Apple Insider, Apple confirmed, “We have temporarily removed the iPadOS 18 update for M4 iPad Pro models as we work to resolve an issue impacting a small number of devices.” There is currently no timeline for when the update will be re-released, but Apple is likely prioritizing a swift resolution.
