NFL Week 8 Grades: Browns Shine Against Ravens, Commanders Snatch Victory

Welcome to the Week 8 grades!

The big story this week is the resurgence of the Cleveland Browns. While they might not be fully back, their impressive 29-24 upset over the Ravens certainly made waves.

For the first seven weeks, the Browns were the only team in the NFL yet to score 20 points in a game, but that changed on Sunday. This victory marked the first time since December 28 that they surpassed that threshold. With Deshaun Watson sidelined for the season, Jameis Winston stepped in and threw for an impressive 334 yards, showcasing a level of play that Watson hadn’t reached all year.

So, what grade did the Browns earn for their surprising win? Let’s break down the grades for each team from Week 8, starting with Cleveland.

Cleveland 29-24 over Baltimore

Grade: A+

Browns: Jameis Winston made a spectacular return to the starting role, throwing for 334 yards and three touchdowns. In his seven games with Watson, the Browns struggled offensively, but Winston's performance revitalized the team. With the Browns at 2-6, it will be intriguing to see how they progress from here.

Ravens: Grade: B- The Ravens can't blame anyone but themselves for this loss. Lamar Jackson had a decent outing with 289 yards and two touchdowns, but missed key opportunities. The defense faltered in the second half as Winston threw for 224 yards and three touchdowns. A missed field goal by Justin Tucker added to their woes. Despite the loss, the Ravens should rebound against the Broncos next week.

Philadelphia 37-17 over Cincinnati

Grade: A

Eagles: Jalen Hurts took charge in the second half, throwing for 150 yards and three of his four touchdowns after halftime. The defense, which struggled initially, tightened up and forced critical turnovers. This was Philadelphia’s most complete performance of the season, making them a strong contender in the NFC East.

Bengals: Grade: D Cincinnati fell apart in the second half, starting with a questionable fourth-down decision by Zac Taylor. Joe Burrow struggled, and the Bengals totaled just 106 yards after halftime. At 3-5, their playoff hopes are looking dim.

Detroit 52-14 over Tennessee

Grade: A+

Lions: The Lions delivered an almost flawless performance, forcing four turnovers and capitalizing on them. Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery led a dominant offense, while special teams made an impact with a 90-yard punt return touchdown. Detroit is rapidly improving and becoming a serious threat in the NFC.

Titans: Grade: F Tennessee's defense gave up over 50 points, highlighting major issues across the board. The offense committed four turnovers, and special teams allowed multiple long returns. This was a dismal showing, and the Titans are struggling to find their footing.

Arizona 28-27 over Miami

Grade: A-

Cardinals: Kyler Murray shined in the second half, completing 18 of 22 passes for 228 yards. He effectively utilized his weapons, with both Marvin Harrison Jr. and Trey McBride surpassing 100 receiving yards. Arizona is emerging as a dark horse in the playoff race.

Dolphins: Grade: B- Tua Tagovailoa's return was encouraging, but the Dolphins fell short. The offense improved with his presence, but defensive lapses cost them the game. They need to shore up their defense to salvage the season.

New England 25-22 over N.Y. Jets

Grade: B

Patriots: Jacoby Brissett stepped in for an injured Jordan Love and helped secure the win, especially in the fourth quarter. New England managed to pull off a crucial victory, even if their offense remains underwhelming.

Jets: Grade: D New York’s kicking woes continued, with Greg Zuerlein missing key kicks. The offense still struggles to find rhythm, and it’s hard to envision a playoff push unless significant changes are made.

Atlanta 31-26 over Tampa Bay

Grade: A-

Falcons: Kirk Cousins excelled against a struggling Buccaneers defense, connecting well with tight end Kyle Pitts. Atlanta’s defense had its moments, making big plays that secured the win and solidified their control over the NFC South.

Buccaneers: Grade: C Tampa Bay's offense made critical mistakes, starting with a fumble on their opening drive. Missing key players like Chris Godwin and Mike Evans hampered their effectiveness. They’ve lost three of their last four and face tough matchups ahead.

Green Bay 30-27 over Jacksonville

Grade: B+

Packers: Malik Willis stepped up after Jordan Love's injury, leading the team to victory. His timely plays in the fourth quarter were instrumental in securing the win. If they can maintain this level of play without Love, Green Bay could stay competitive.

Jaguars: Grade: B- Jacksonville nearly staged a comeback but faltered on defense against a backup quarterback. Trevor Lawrence’s turnovers proved costly, and they need to tighten up if they hope to compete moving forward.

Houston 23-20 over Indianapolis

Grade: B-

Texans: Houston’s defense excelled against Anthony Richardson, notching five sacks. Joe Mixon kept the offense moving, and the Texans are positioning themselves well in the AFC South after sweeping the Colts.

Colts: Grade: B- The Colts struggled to adapt their game plan to Richardson’s strengths early on. Although they tightened up defensively in the second half, inconsistency at quarterback remains a concern.

Buffalo 31-10 over Seattle

Grade: A

Bills: Buffalo showcased their dominance in this game. Josh Allen and James Cook led an impressive offensive performance, while the defense stifled Seattle throughout. The Bills are looking formidable in the AFC.

Seahawks: Grade: D- Seattle struggled against Buffalo's defense, managing only 32 rushing yards. The offense couldn’t recover from a poor start, and the team is now in a worrying slump with four losses in five games.

Denver 28-14 over Carolina

Grade: A

Broncos: Bo Nix had a breakout game, throwing for 284 yards and three touchdowns. The defense also applied pressure on Bryce Young, contributing to a solid team win. Denver is gearing up for tougher challenges ahead.

Panthers: Grade: F Carolina managed only one scoring drive, and Bryce Young's struggles continued with two interceptions. Their defense also faltered, leaving them in a difficult position as they eye the upcoming draft.

L.A. Chargers 26-8 over New Orleans

Grade: A-

Chargers: The Chargers' defense was dominant, preventing New Orleans from reaching the end zone. Justin Herbert led a steady offense, securing a comfortable victory. With a strong defense and consistent play, they’re poised for a successful stretch.

Saints: Grade: D- New Orleans' offensive struggles continued, leading to their fifth straight loss. With poor quarterback play and an inability to score, their season is quickly slipping away.

Washington 18-15 over Chicago

Grade: B+

Commanders: Jayden Daniels delivered a clutch performance, including a game-winning Hail Mary. Despite struggling in the red zone, his playmaking ability kept Washington in the game and secured a much-needed win.

Bears: Grade: B Chicago mounted a strong comeback led by D'Andre Swift, but ultimately fell short. The defense held strong until the final play, but they’ll need to tighten up if they want to secure future victories.

Kansas City 27-20 over Las Vegas

Grade: B-

Chiefs: Kansas City relied on their defense to grind out a win. Patrick Mahomes did enough to keep the offense moving, but they struggled to find rhythm at times. They’ve mastered winning in tough situations, which is crucial as the season progresses.

Raiders: Grade: C Las Vegas missed crucial opportunities near the goal line, which ultimately cost them the game. Their inability to convert in critical moments highlights ongoing issues that need addressing.

Overall, Week 8 showcased thrilling matchups and surprising performances, leaving plenty to consider as teams head into the second half of the season.
