“The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” debuted on Hulu earlier this month, and the lives of its stars have quickly become public. The show is currently Hulu's top program, spotlighting eight influencers from the Mormon "#MomTok" community. One cast member gained attention after revealing her involvement in "soft-swinging"—limited sexual interactions with other couples—in a TikTok video.
However, the series is less about swinging and more about the complexities of friendship, faith, betrayal, gaslighting, infidelity, and vacationing—much like a typical season of Real Housewives.
Women from the Mormon community who spoke with USA TODAY acknowledge that while some of these stories do exist, they don’t represent the entire spectrum of their experiences. Whether this is a typical portrayal depends largely on who you ask and where they live. Some more devout members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (as they prefer to be called) have expressed discomfort with the show’s casual references to sex, alcohol, and gambling. Others, however, appreciate the way the women engage with contemporary issues, including feminism.
