With each new version of Android, Google continuously seeks to enhance the notification experience. Recent updates have aimed to simplify notifications, making them less intrusive while increasing their functionality. In Android 16, Google might roll out a feature akin to Apple’s Dynamic Island notifications: Rich Ongoing Notifications.
According to findings from Android Authority, Google is currently testing a new API called Rich Ongoing Notifications as part of the Android 15 QPR1 Beta 3. This API allows app developers to create pill-shaped notifications in the status bar, showcasing the app icon, a custom background, and relevant text or time information.

While this new API isn’t yet available for third-party applications, developer Mishaal Rahman has created some mockups using the command line interface. These mockups illustrate how various apps could utilize Rich Ongoing Notifications effectively. For example, a ride-hailing app could display the estimated arrival time of your cab, while an airline app could show the countdown to boarding.
Additionally, the Clock app could leverage this feature to display an active timer or the time remaining until an upcoming alarm. Notably, Samsung has already implemented similar functionality in its One UI 7.0, where ongoing activities like calls or timers are shown in the status bar as pill-shaped notifications.

Since the introduction of the iPhone 14, many Android users have expressed interest in Dynamic Island-style notifications, and this upcoming feature could fulfill those requests.
As Android 16 approaches, the potential for a more interactive and visually appealing notification experience seems promising, positioning Android to better compete with Apple’s offerings.
